Small and Mighty: Inspiration From a Hedgehog

An unexpectedly profound response from a hedgehog during a communication session inspires both art and action.

This is a story about one of my clients: Spike the hedgehog.

Spike was sick, and during our last animal communication session with him before he died, his person asked what he had been teaching her.

His reply was simple yet profound: “We can be small and mighty.”

He reminded us that small beings, small actions, and small changes can have a big impact.

I told his person that the sentiment he was bringing across reminded me of one of the principles in adrienne maree brown’s book Emergent Strategy: “Small is good, small is all.”

(According to adrienne maree brown’s website, Emergent Strategy “is a guidebook for getting in right relationship with change, using our own nature and that of creatures beyond human as our teachers.”)

A few weeks later, Spike’s person reached out to let me know that he had died, and she was reading Emergent Strategy in his honor. I couldn’t think of a better way of honoring him.

A couple of days after that, Spike visited me in a dream and encouraged me to draw him. So I did, and with his person’s permission, I’m sharing the drawings and sentiments with you in hopes that it helps you feel just a little bit heartened during these bleak times. Maybe it will inspire you to do one small good thing for another being today.

If you want help communicating with your animal companion and finding out what they’re teaching you, I invite you to book a session with me.
